Lesson Plans for 7th Grade Language Arts
Week of March 4-8th, 2013

It's our first 5-day school week in a long time! :) Rest Up!

Monday, 3/4/13:
  • distribute 30-word Unit 6 Study Guide in preparation for Friday's Unit Test
    • students who earned 21/30 or below on the last 30-word test are REQUIRED to complete the study guide by Friday; optional study tool for all other students.
  • Assign WW pages 134-137 (1st two pages due Wednesday; last two due Thursday)
  • Think-Pair-Share "Food for Thought" Discussion Questions about The Watsons go to Birmingham--1963"
  • Distribute two-sided review questions (Part I) for Chapters 1-6, and Chapters 7-15
    • students may work with peers to complete them--check answers of Chapters 1-6 before the end of period
  • HW:
    • WW pgs 134-135 due Wednesday; pgs 135-136 due Thursday;
    • Word Wisdom 30-word Unit Test this Friday--study guide required for students who earned less than 21/30 on last Unit test---due Friday
    • Finish Chapter 7-15 (Part I) Review questions
    • Watsons Unit test Wednesday.

Tuesday, 3/5/13
  • Correct answers to Chapters 7-15 (Part I) Review Questions
  • Distribute Part II Chapters 1-6 and Chapters 7-15 Review Questions
    • work in pairs to complete them, finding contextual evidence as support
    • discuss/correct answers as whole-group
  • Distribute "Extended Response Study Guide" (sample questions)--follow directions and begin discussing/brainstorming in small groups
  • Individually, prepare your answers for tomorrow's test. Students will be permitted to use this on the test tomorrow.
  • HW:

    • WW pgs 134-135 due tomorrow; pgs 135-136 due Thursday;
    • Word Wisdom 30-word Unit Test this Friday--study guide required for students who earned less than 21/30 on last Unit test---due Friday
    • Finish Extended Response Study Guide (optional but HIGHLY recommended!) :)
    • Watsons Unit test tomorrow--bring book!

Wednesday, 3/6/13
  • Final moments to review for Watsons while I walk around to check/stamp Word wisdom pages due today.
  • Take Watsons test
  • With any remaining time, students may do one of the following:
    • 1) Finish Word Wisdom pages due tomorrow
    • 2) Complete/Study Unit 6 WW study guide
    • 3) Choose and read an article of choice in SCOPE Language Arts magazines in front of room
  • HW:
    • WW pgs 135-136 due tomorrow.
    • Continue Studying for Friday's 30-word Unit 6 Test on Friday

Thursday, 3/7/13
  • Briefly discuss yesterday's Watsons test---problems, successes, feedback, etc.
  • Check/correct answers to Word Wisdom Unit 6 review pages using a student leader while I walk around to stamp/give credit to this week's WW homework.
  • Review for tomorrow's 30 word test:
    • B-I-N-G-O Review Game and/or
    • "Hang-Man" with Clues on the SMART Board (Create and write sentences on the SMART Board with a blank "", giving context clues as a clue to the vocab word.)

Friday, 3/8/13
  • Take Unit 6 30-word Posttest
    • collect & randomly redistribute to grade together in class
  • As an anticipatory guide/activity before reading "The Race Against Death", prepare students' with necessary background knowledge of the 1920s. Refer to/discuss questions on SMARTBoard:
    • BEFORE VIDEO/ BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE:
      • When you hear "1920s", what do you think of? List & discuss background knowledge of this time period.
    • WHILE WATCHING "SCOPE Time Machine: 1920s",a short 3-minute video, take notes on a half sheet (or scrap sheet) of paper about the following:
      • 1) Why was the 1920s a time of celebration? (Why were the people celebrating?)
      • 2) What were some discoveries, developments and inventions that came from this time period?
      • 3) In what ways did both women and children advance during this time period?
      • 4) Identify at least 2 connections, or ways that the 1920s relates to what we read in The Watsons
    • AFTER VIDEO/ REFLECTION:
      • Would you want to live in the 1920s? Why or why not? How is it different from today?
  • Distribute March 2013 SCOPE Language Arts Magazine
